What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little bad luck, but we sometimes see heat pump problems in Derby during the cooler months, when they’re required to keep you toasty. While you know the team at Giordanos Heating and Air Conditioning will forever be there ASAP when you need us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to double check a repair is needed and save yourself some money if it’s not. We’ve gathered this checklist of things to try before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound silly, but make sure everything is switched “on”. We’ve been to numerous calls only to realize the thermostat or the heat pump itself is set to off.
    • Look at your thermostat to guarantee it’s on, switched to the appropriate temperature and isn’t set to cool.
    • Then try replacing the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks correct, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re hesitant about where it is) and test your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Double check that your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t turned on, revisit your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, confirm that it’s revealing the proper time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s really night, it may not turn your heat on because it doesn’t think you’re home.
  3. Is an obstruction causing your furnace to breakdown?
    • Examine your air filters to make sure they’re not blocking things up.
    • Do you have any blocked ducts, vents or cool air intakes?
    • Are all supply registers exposed?
    • Is your exhaust flue clear?

If you’ve moved through this checklist and you’re still deprived of heat, call Giordanos Heating and Air Conditioning at 203-734-7648 or arrange an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the welcoming and cozy place it should be.
