Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We stress regular maintenance on your heating and cooling system constantly, but this doesn’t only mean ongoing tune-ups – it also means looking at your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system operating smoothly and increase your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it by yourself! Now is the perfect time to inspect your filter, as the cold season comes to an end and summer is on the horizon. There are a lot of benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Lengthening the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to cause a system failure is a dirty air filter. Excess dirt that is built up on your filter can cause your whole system to run harder than it should to keep the air in your home cool. Not only will it impact the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and end with an overheated system.

Improving indoor air quality
The goal of an air filter is that it catches contaminants through your air system before it reaches your home. After the filter has been in for a while, the less effective it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your house, which is even more critical if someone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures around the corner, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it circulating in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help your family breathe easy and remain healthy throughout allergy season.

Inspect your system or current air filter provider for suggestions on how regularly you should be swapping out your filter. For many filters through Giordanos Heating and Air Conditioning, we advise an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the ideal time to exchange your air filter?
